“The Mentoring Program is definitely one in which you get as much out of it as you put in. I was lucky enough to have a mentor who was engaged and eager to help, and through this I now have a full-time job at the company my mentor works at. My advice for future mentees would be to use the program as a guide to building a relationship with your mentor, but don’t be afraid to move beyond the set goals and tasks to pursue opportunities that arise during the program.”

“The SMS Mentoring Program was an insightful and enriching experience. Though I don’t study marketing, I benefited from many of my mentor’s insights. These insights were transferable across all types of industries and careers, and included networking tips, interview skills, and most importantly – how to identify my strengths and weaknesses, and create my personal branding. My advice to any prospective mentee would be to think carefully about what you want to get out of each session and prepare questions for your mentor, so that you can get the most value out of your time together. That being said, don’t forget to have fun – enjoy the process of getting to know each other and forming a friendship!”

What was your SMS Mentoring Program experience like?

In my personal experience, I find it really hard to network and reach out to industry professionals outside of structured one-off networking events. With the SMS mentoring program, I was fortunate enough to be able to quickly build a strong friendship with my mentor, who really cared about me and the professional challenges I was facing. I not only had such a fun time in our weekly coffee catch ups, but received really invaluable advice from him, as someone who had been in the professional services industry for over 10 years.

What were the highlights and benefits of the program?

The highlight was simply meeting my mentor and hearing all of his many engaging stories. It’s reassuring to meet someone in industry and know that there’s so many experiences waiting for you even after you graduate from university.

Any advice for future mentees?

Even though I don’t do marketing, SMS has so many mentors from a variety of different companies and backgrounds, which means that they will definitely match you up well. Also, every mentor who signs up to the program, signs up because they want to meet you and the talent that you’ll bring to the table. If you’re even thinking about joining the program, I would highly recommend doing so!
