SMS First Year's Guide Issue #1

Introducing… SMS’ inaugural First Year’s Guide! Throughout Semester 1, you’ll be taken on a journey of how to succeed in Marketing throughout university and even as a career. Stay tuned each week to learn key lessons such as how to network, surviving midsems season, internship advice and more!

𝙊𝙠 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩... 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙄𝙎 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜? According to the Oxford Dictionary, marketing is defined as “the action of promoting and selling products or services”. It sounds simple enough, but there are many factors, variables and strategies for getting a top from your favourite clothing brand, or for purchasing your morning cereal from Woolies.

You’ll cover all these basics and principles in MKTG1001 (Marketing Principles). An easily digestible unit, it is the perfect introduction to Marketing for beginners to the major (and is a popular elective across all fields too!).

The other first year Marketing major unit is MKTG1002 (Market Research). To better understand consumers, market research is used in various forms - think interviews, questionnaires and basic data analysis. This is an invaluable unit to set you up for success in the age of a data-driven world.

𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙨, 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚:

  • Group work + teamwork!

  • Presentations

  • Sociable and chatty classmates

ᴘʀᴏ-ᴛɪᴘ:

Most, if not all, Marketing units have 2% of assessment allocated to participating in a research study. Check the Canvas unit “2020 - Business Research Component” for how you can sign up.

Good luck with your first lectures and tutorials! Here are some more words of advice for your first weeks of uni:

  • Don’t be afraid to chat with strangers! Remember, everyone’s in the same shoes as you when it comes to making friends and settling into uni.

  • Attend all society events that interest you even in the tiniest bit! They’re well worth going to to make new friends, grab the inevitable bit of free food they might offer and gain some understanding in how uni works. e.g. SMS First Year Event: Pizza & Chill

  • Subcommittee applications for a lot of business societies would be open within the first couple weeks of uni. We suggest you not hesitate to take the chance to apply for all that you can as they’re a great way to build connections, gain teamwork experience and have fun. Get started with Join SMS: Subcommittee Applications Now Open!

Stay tuned for more insider information on subcoms, the value of networking, LinkedIn advice and more!
